Today I want to let you know how I originally got into EMDR and how powerful and truly life changing (in a very positive way) it was for me.
Over 38 years ago I was in a severe car accident where I was clipped towards the back of my car. It sent me up the center divider and I flipped upside down and landed upside down about 30 feet later. Thankfully I had minor physical injuries, but emotionally I was a wreck. It was the first day of the second semester of graduate school. I was so traumatized I could not drive, and just to be a passenger in a car gave me horrible anxiety. I was getting flashbacks all the time. I just shoved it down because I said to myself that I needed to get through grad school and didn’t have time for therapy. Well, that definitely was not a great decision in the long run.
About 25 years later I found a paper I wrote in grad school and it totally retriggered me! I was 100% immobilized and decided I really needed to deal with this and found a therapist right away. Once I started therapy she told me she does this “voodoo” like thing as she waves her fingers back and forth across my line of vision and it would help me. I told her I would try anything, and it wasn’t voodoo at all, she was really explaining how different this was. I trusted her enough to try this. Within 4 or 5 sessions (an hour each) I stopped having flashbacks, fear of driving, my headaches and stomachaches pretty much just disappeared.
Once I was working for a few years and knew I could utilize EMDR in the work setting I was in, I got trained and have been using it ever since. It really is a game changer!
